A person holding a candle
A person holding a candle

Two versions of the same poem; Can you find the differences? Which one is more relatable/ real to you?

They carry their light

Wherever they go

In the bright sunlit days

On dark streets at night

If you meet a lamplighter

Be ready to stand and shine

They don’t dim their light

Or hide in the lime

No, they share their light

Lighting lamps along the path

Where someone stands waiting

To see love, safety in sight

Needing guidance, a way to see

That you’re not alone

I’ve got you,

And you’ve got me

It doesn’t dim their brightness

Lights together Only shines the brighter

The flame that you carry

The spark that’s inside

That’s the lamplighter’s strength

Their love they can’t hide

See, they can’t control

where their light goes

Who it will touch,

Or what will grow

But they know that it must

So they share, and they go

If you meet a lamplighter

Chances are you’ve become one, too

Because your light helped me see

More life, a better view

Along the path I walked

Thoughts swirled of the cost

Not sure of where I was going

Or if I was lost

It was uneven,

This ground that I walked

It was hard, I was alone

I couldn’t see, and no one talked

I stopped in my tracks

Because I was afraid

So much I didn’t know

So much doubt in me I had made

Til I felt someone touch my arm

And I saw

One with a lamp

The light’s glow made me warm

In that moment I felt

Something inside me start

To open up my soul

And warm my heart

This lamplighter saw it

And gave me a lamp

To keep my light bright

And light my path

The magic of bringing

our lights together

Didn’t dim their light

But made mine grow stronger

And as I started again

To walk the path I could see

Others wanting to shine their light but in need

Of sharing their light,

And watching it grow

Being there for another

Who may not know where to go

Holding on tight to the light

And then letting it go

Be a lamplighter, my friend

Shine the light that is you

Don’t hold back for the fear

Don’t let it control you

Share yourself with just one

And be proud to be you

And you’ll find that your light

Will give others permission to shine
